This was great, and timely for me.

I agree with much of the sentiment. There is no perfect time to have kids, so if you want them, you should do it. If you were to “save for” having kids, you would never do it because you could never save enough!

Having said that, I do think some improved awareness of some expenses would be helpful to know in advance.

For example, everyone has heard that college is expensive, and that you need to save for it. But pre-school?!?!? I had no idea. Where I live, pre school is no cheaper than most decent colleges. But you only get a year or two to save for it.

That’s not the only thing, but hopefully you get the point.

Agreed! In major cities a good pre-school can be over $2k/month!

Funny but true: I posted this comment while waiting outside the school gates to collect my eldest from 1st grade. Immediately after posting I got into a conversation with another dad about pre-school, and he recommended one that's $3k per month. 😬

Well, I have 2 year old twins. So that's $72 grand per year. 😱

Suggestions for drumming up a $72k salary increase? Anyone?

Thanks Adamx2! Great conversation. I really enjoyed the discussion over modelling for humans.

You want to have a long term relationship with these people. You have to expose them to life and share your decisions (with appropriate guardrails) openly and honestly. I also love exercising with my teenagers I am losing ground gradually but its a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing.
